Sharon Kovacs is a Dutch artist and one of the most underrated vocal talents in the world. Her latest effort comes after a long hiatus during which she completely changed her style, her band, her producer and her presentation. Her unique voice and style was perfectly captured in her first album, “Shades of Black”. Perhaps because she felt “captive” by the dark feel of that work she overcorrected in a bid to break free and find her happiness. Cheap Smell, while still showcasing the attributes of her sultry voice, is more of a cheap feel. The musical depth just isn’t there. The harmony in rhythm and voice falls flat. The pop sound is more factory than artisan.
