Acclaimed singer, composer and producer Lydia Ainsworth will share her upcoming fourth album Sparkles & Debris on May 21 via Zombie Cat Records. The record follows 2019’s Phantom Forest and blends live drums, guitars and bass with Ainsworth’s signature vast electronic landscapes.
“Longing seems to be a major theme running through my songs on this album,” says Ainsworth. “Whether that is longing in love, longing to be free from oppression, or longing for the muse of inspiration to make an appearance. I have included some spells and charms in there as well that have proven effective, if any of my listeners want to use them for help with their own desires.”
Written and produced by Ainsworth in Toronto, New York and Los Angeles over many years, Sparkles & Debris reflects her usual composer’s mindset and instinct for idiosyncratic melodies and structures. The album also marks a departure from the more solitary creative process that her previous releases were born from. Ainsworth recorded all her vocals at her engineer/mixer Dajaun Martineau’s studio in Toronto. Mark Kelso provided live drums and Neil Chapman and John Findlay added electric guitar and bass in the city’s Desert Fish and Noble St. studios. These live elements blend with Ainsworth’s own samples, programming and voice to create the record’s sonic tapestry.
Lydia Ainsworth is an internationally acclaimed singer, composer and producer whose 2015 debut album Right from Real was nominated for a Juno Award for best electronic album and shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. In 2017 her second LP, Darling of the Afterglow, brought with it headlining tours of North America, Europe and Japan as well as support tours with Perfume Genius. In 2019 she released Phantom Forest, and that same year, “Earth Song,” her collaboration with Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, appeared in the last episode of Season 3 of Stranger Things. Her original scores for film and commercials have screened at festivals such as Sundance, Cannes and Hot Docs.

With his debut EP Lights Off out now, Scottish singer-songwriter Euan Allison has shared the title track to go alongside the release. The EP focuses on the online divide of social and political views, and more so, the effects of unplugging from technology.
“When you actually go to meet people, have real conversations, you realize the world isn’t as divided as it seems online”, Euan shares. “‘Lights Off’ is referring to screens and phones; when you turn the screens off, you have a better view of the world than with the phone screens on.”
On the title track, the Glasgow-based artist strips down his sound for a delicate piano ballad, allowing his voice and lyrics to bring out the poignance of the topic and encourage a more minimalist approach to the world.

Alicia Witt is relishing in the success of her new music.
After her single “Chasing Shadows” has spent more than a month on Billboard’s AC chart, the pianist and actress, 46, says she has “no words” for the accomplishment as she releases her album The Conduit.
“To have been in the top 30 for 5 weeks, to know that this song I made up is being heard on the radio to that extent, it’s a deep, deep glow,” she tells PEOPLE. “It’s just something I will forever be so proud of. I’ll always be so glad that The Conduit was the album that first got a song on the charts — it just feels incredible and makes me even more excited to be about to go on tour.”
Witt — who most recently starred in two Christmas Hallmark films in 2019 and 2020 — says her upcoming album is inspired by some of the greats of the 1970s.
“I’ve had so many musical inspirations throughout my life — but this album, in particular, is an homage to the great singer-songwriters of the ’70s, like Elton John, Billy Joel, Carole King, Paul Simon and Barry Manilow (to me he is one of the all-time greats),” she says, adding that she directly refers to the decade in her track “Any Midnight.” “The soaring strings feel like a real tribute to those incredible albums where big, cinematic string sections were so gloriously expected in pop music.”
“Although it may not be apparent from first listen, a big inspiration for parts of the arrangement of ‘Last Surviving Son’ is Eric Carmen’s soaring instrumental breakdown in ‘All By Myself,'” she adds. “And then there’s ‘Face Change’ and ‘The Ocean’ — both of which could be arranged in that classic style, and when I play them solo on the piano they’re singer-songwriter ballads.”
About her track “The Ocean,” Witt reveals that it was pitched to several male country artists but she “absolutely loved taking [it] into this trance-pop realm.”
“I wanted ‘Face Change’ to feel like a journey to the outer reaches of the galaxy — spinning off this realm for a moment,” she adds.
Along with her album out now, Witt is set to release her book Small Changes on Oct. 4.

Alessia Cara has announced that her third studio album In The Meantime was released on September 24 via Def Jam Recordings. The album, which follows up 2018’s The Pains of Growing, will feature the recently released singles “Sweet Dream” and “Shapeshifter.”
“So excited to finally start this new era,” Cara wrote on Twitter following the announcement of In The Meantime. “Best thing I’ve made so far & so so much more coming love you thanks for waiting.”
In July, the Grammy Award-winning singer offered the two aforementioned lead singles to present the theme of In The Meantime.
“The theme of duality is recurring on this next album, so it made sense to release two songs to introduce both ends of the thread,” Cara explained. “The first side being ‘Sweet Dream’ which represents the hardship & helplessness surrounding my last couple of years. It’s about insomnia and the hoops my brain jumps through at night while I’m supposed to be asleep. Never fun!”
“Then on the flip side, there’s ‘Shapeshifter’ which is witty and sophisticated in a way that I feel represents the more mature and light-hearted parts of the album. I had to go through lots of pain to regain my footing and this song feels unwavering, despite it not being about the happiest of things.”
Of “Shapeshifter,” she shared: “[This] represents the more sophisticated and fiery parts of the album. I had to experience different forms of pain to regain my footing and this song feels unwavering, despite it not being about the happiest of things (got my feelings hurt whatever).”
Cara has begun building a narrative world for In The Meantime through its two singles. The visuals for the project thus far have been character driven and attentive to detail as a means of accurately portraying the storytelling presented through the singer’s lyrics.
