Marina, Marina - Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land (Album), music, Musica

Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land is the fifth studio album by Welsh singer-songwriter Marina, released on 11 June 2021, through Atlantic Records. She began songwriting for the project in January 2020, around the time she released the soundtrack single “About Love”. The album was preceded by the release of four singles, “Man’s World”, “Purge the Poison”, the title track, and “Venus Fly Trap” with each one having a music video.

Following the release of her fourth studio album Love + Fear in 2019, Marina embarked on a multi-leg tour and released an acoustic companion extended play (EP), Love + Fear (Acoustic). She also began work on a fifth studio album, and confirmed her plans via an Instagram post, in January 2020. The news was followed up by the release of the soundtrack single “About Love” in February, which was featured on the soundtrack to the American romantic comedy film To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You (2020).

Ancient Dreams In a Modern Land has been described as an electropop and dance-pop record. During songwriting sessions for the record, Marina was motivated by the mistreatment of women and LGBT individuals throughout history, and gathered further inspiration from the Salem witch trials. The lyrics to the songs are wordy, and present more “vim and attitude” than the songs on Love + Fear.

The album’s title track is a pop rock and disco song with a “cinematic guitar riff”. Danielle Chelosky, a writer for Stereogum, compared it to Britney Spears’ 2008 single “Womanizer”. “Man’s World” was described as a dreamy and melodic alternative pop anthem. Backed by a piano performance from Marina, she criticises the behaviour of men towards women and minorities. “Purge the Poison” was called “an Earth Day anthem of sorts” by Billboard’s Gab Ginsberg, due to its lyrics that speak of climate change.

Several critics made comparisons between the songs on Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land and Marina’s older albums. Entertainment Weekly called “Purge the Poison” a “callback” to The Family Jewels (2010). Furthermore, Vogue’s Keaton Bell said the lyrics to “Man’s World” were similar to those of “Savages” from her third album, Froot (2015). Furthermore, Dimitra Gurduiala from Atwood Magazine said “Savages” is a masterpiece of a song that Love + Fear lacked, but that “Purge the Poison” suggested a return to this type of era for Marina.

All tracks are written by Marina.

Sarah Kinsley – The King (EP)

Moments of clarity and emotional truths show up on the wondrous second EP from the New York artist.

Sometimes, growing up is no fun. They say that time moves faster when you’re older, and trying to hold on to the important bits of youth as you start to leave your teenage years behind – friendships, spontaneity, a sense of adventure – can become increasingly tricky when everything feels dizzying and uncertain, as if the world is spinning around at 100mph.

It’s an emotionally affecting reality that the New York-based Sarah Kinsley confronts on ‘The King’ EP, an immersive collection of indie-pop songs that evoke how momentous it feels to stand at the edge of adulthood. The sublime title track – which the singer-songwriter and producer has previously said captures “everything about what it means to turn 20” – draws from the exact moment where fear turns to clarity: as she sings of ageing and irreversible change, her crushingly beautiful voice warmly hugs the lilting melody, as though she is comforting herself. But the optimistic pre-chorus – “So tell me/Before we get older/Let’s do everything” – suggests hope, not self-pity.

The rest of the EP’s songs share a similar kind of generous intimacy. Kinsley is direct and visceral in her storytelling, she unearths quiet revelations that are threaded together by her own crisp production. ‘Over + Under’ is a personal disclosure of desire: “I think of you as the wind catches onto the breeze/Pulling me/You are the ocean of endless possibility”. As she delivers, her vocal shifts between a whisper and a gentle timbre, swirling and multiplying into layered harmonies, indulging in its own malleability.

Hypnotising and majestic, the piano-led ‘I Am Not A Mountain’ is elevated by ripples of dramatic strings, while Kinsley’s delicate playing is filled with cinematic swells and classical inflections. But it’s on the flickering ‘Karma’, the EP’s most upbeat cut, where the music gets more idiosyncratic; lyrically, Kinsley wonders if she’s ever going to figure things out, and she finds ways to make her home studio set-up – here, she makes sounds from inanimate objects such as light switches and glasses – sound swaggering and enormous. It’s an offering of casual magic.

‘The King’ is a brief effort that clocks in at little over 20 minutes long, but it’s meticulously crafted and, at times, oddly euphoric. Kinsley morphs the EP’s short timespan into a genuinely moving reminder that, even in times of uncertainty and confusion, a new beginning is something to be cherished.

Tracklist:

01 – Karma
02 – Over + Under
03 – I’m Not A Mountain
04 – Caught Up In A Dream
05 – The King
