HOW BEAUTY HOLDS THE HAND OF SORROW’s finds Brun returning to her early work’s intimate poignancy, its nine tracks opening with the piano-led ‘Last Breath’ and concluding with a piano-only interpretation of After The Great Storm’s ‘Don’t Run And Hide’, while ‘Lose My Way’ finds her joined by Oscar-nominated, Emmy Award-winning composer Dustin O’Halloran (also of A Winged Victory For The Sullen) and ‘Closer’ occupies territory somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush. She picks up her acoustic guitar for ‘Meet You At The Delta’ and ‘Breaking The Surface’, and ‘Song For Thrill And Tom’’s luminous buoyancy is meanwhile boosted by angelic backing vocals from Jennie Abrahamson, Linnea Olsson, Therese Börjesson and Carolina Wallin Perez. Nestling at the album’s heart, furthermore, lies the simply magical ‘Trust’.

“Both albums deal with the bigger questions in life,” says Brun, “but in 2020 these questions have become even bigger. Even though I wrote most of them before this whole pandemic started, I feel they all have a message that fits the situation we’re in…”

HOW BEAUTY HOLDS THE HAND OF SORROW is Brun’s ninth album, mostly written in the Norwegian mountains during summer 2019. It was largely recorded at Stockholm’s Atlantis Studios and Studio Bruket, home to Tonbruket and the studio where musician and co-producer Martin Hederos – who also co-wrote a number of songs – and Studio Bruket’s own house sound technician Anton Sundell reside. The album was produced by Brun, Hederos and Sundell.

Ellie Goulding offered fans an early holiday surprise with her new EP, Songbook for Christmas. Available now via Polydor, the six-song collection offers an engaging assortment of holiday classics and enduring seasonal favorites.

Released on the heels of her latest album, Brightest Blue, Songbook for Christmas features recordings from throughout Goulding’s career; from her 2010 cover of Elton John’s “Your Song” (which appeared on a coveted John Lewis Christmas ad in the UK) to original compositions like “The Writer,” off her 2010 debut, Lights, and “Explosions,” of 2012’s Halcyon. The EP also features the traditional “O Holy Night,” as well as covers of The Waterboys’ “How Long Will I Love You?” and Don McLean’s “Vincent.”

An expanded edition will also be available via Amazon Music, featuring Goulding’s moving cover of Joni Mitchell’s “River.” The Amazon Original track topped the UK’s Pop chart last December, officially making it the last No.1 single of the decade.

“I’m excited to release Songbook for Christmas, a compilation of my favorite festive holiday tracks and winter favorites,” said Goulding in a statement. “These releases span across various releases and different stages of my career, so it’s really nice to have them together on an EP for my fans to enjoy. This year’s been challenging for so many, but I hope this EP can bring some festive cheer and some comfort this Christmas.”

In July, Goulding released her fourth studio album, Brightest Blue. The highly-anticipated album debuted at No.1 in the UK, and garnered the pop star warm reviews, including by AllMusic, who called Brightest Blue “a powerful reclamation of self that recaptures the simplicity of her debut and the vulnerability of Halcyon.”

Mainstream alternative-pop royalty Halsey’s latest release, ‘Manic: Confessional EP’, is an intimately divulgent addendum to her third studio album, ‘Manic’.

Ashley– now stripped of her stage name and authentically self-humanized– tells listeners she was born at “9:29 on 9/29” as the EP’s candid introduction “929” opens a dialogue of unmitigated self-reflection formulated into a ranting stream of consciousness, a motif that progressively evolves.

“More” maturely traverses one of the singer’s most lyrically vulnerable sides, detailing the tragedy surrounding a confronted miscarriage and its anchoring grief with raw, resounding emotion. Timeless classic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is the springboard for “clementine”‘s unique delivery, and upbeat tracks like “3am” and the tenacious “Graveyard” resolve any impressions of lasting somberness.

Overall demonstrating the shedding of her edgier ‘Badlands’-era skin in favor of continuing a more meaningful narrative, listeners will find ‘Manic: Confessional EP’ portrays Halsey as her most genuine self without straying from her trademark sound.
