inBadlands is the debut studio and concept album by American singer and songwriter Halsey, released on August 28, 2015 byAstralwerks and Capitol. The name “Badlands” is a reference to Halsey’s state of mind while writing the album, to give a physical place as a metaphor for a desolate and lonely mind.
In aninterview with Complex Magazine, Halsey explained her storytelling abilities and what she strived to achieve with her LP:
Every song I write is autobiographical and is about people, and that’s one of the things that gets complicated. You have to decide where’s your place as a songwriter. I hate limiting myself, and I hate censoring myself, but every now and then, I’ll write a line and be like, “Oh no, I can’t do that.” But, I pushed it a little far with that with Badlands. […] The idea of Badlands was creating a space with sound, which is a really difficult thing to do. […] I’ve just been working with incredibly talented people who just get it.
Musically the album is rooted in alternative pop.
Signposted by its prominent chart visibility on iTunes, Badlands has amassed a healthy number of preorder sales ahead of its release. Per a Hits Daily Double report, the current total is nearly 40,000. Upon release, Badlands entered the Top 5 of the iTunes Overall Top Albums Chart, landing at #2. Simultaneously, the record landed at #1 on the Alternative Albums Chart, while five songs hold spots in the Top 20 of the Top Alternative Songs Chart.
The album debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with a total of 115,000 (97,000 pure album sales) which marked the second highest debut for a female in 2015 on the Billboard 200 so far and marks the highest charting album released by the Astralwerksrecord company so far.
Elsewhere, the album debuted at number two in Australia, number three in both Italy and Ireland, number five in the Netherlands and reached the top 10 in both the United Kingdom and Belgian (Ultratop Flanders).
